The university has a number of places for first-year students accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The final selection is subject to availability of places, academic results and, where applicable, other admission requirements. Earning the MBBCh degree opens the door to a variety of exciting and challenging careers. Surgeons, pediatricians, pathologists, radiologists, primary care physicians all start with an MBBCh. South Africa urgently needs well-trained and competent health professionals who can deliver health services, often with very limited resources. In recognition of our commitment to improving the lives of our citizens and addressing the current shortage of well-trained and highly qualified physicians, the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg launched the Graduate Medical Entrance Program (GEMP) to increase the number of medical graduates. The GEMP allows suitably qualified candidates who meet certain minimum requirements to enter the third year of the MBBCh degree. This gives these students the opportunity to complete their medical school in just four years, after which they enter their residency and government-mandated period of community service. The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) is a 6-year full-time course.
The curriculum is the standard qualification for the medical profession. Tasks include examining and diagnosing patients, prescribing medications, performing minor surgeries, and treating injuries, illnesses, and other conditions. Once qualified, it is essential that two years of probationary and another year of community service be completed before the qualified medical practitioner can complete his specialist training. The Faculty of Health Sciences uses a composite index to guide the selection of candidates. These include:1) Your enrollment results for five subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics/Life Sciences and the other two major subjects. We look at the percentage achieved, not the symbol.2) National Baseline Test (NBT) results. The Financial Aid Office provides information on student support and scholarships. University-funded scholarships include Vice-Chancellor Scholarships, University Entrance Scholarships, Gender Equality Scholarships, Sports Scholarships, and National Olympiad Awards. Information on NSFAS funding is available on the NSFAS website. External Scholarship Portal: The Bursaries South Africa website offers a comprehensive list of scholarships in South Africa. With Candidates Plus, applications can only be submitted online.

South Africa offers great opportunities for doctors. There is an urgent need for doctors in underserved areas, and providing high-quality prevention, diagnosis and therapy services in a resource-poor environment is a challenge. Applicants may study these courses for non-degree purposes at most South African universities. For more information on the courses offered by Wits Plus, check out the part-time courses at GEM. The WAPT is a selection test for the GEMP, which is written only once a year and is only open to invited candidates. Candidates prepare for this test only by self-study.
The content covered in the WAPT relates to courses covered by MBBCh second-year students, and knowledge is critical to the future success of the study. The faculty recommends that all candidates prepare for the test after submitting their application so that they can pass the test. The remaining applicants will be placed on a waiting list until applicants who are still completing their studies have had the opportunity to submit their final academic certificate (by December 14). Once this deadline has passed and the actual number of available places is determined, all applications will be ranked according to academic rating and the highest scoring applicants will be offered a place in the program, while other applications will be deemed unsuccessful. To be eligible to participate in the GEMP, an applicant must successfully complete all three components of the WAPT separately. All applicants who fail one or more components of WAPT will be informed that their application is unsuccessful and that they will no longer be considered. The faculty will not get involved in litigation and we will not accept requests for new grades or inspection of exam papers. This Decision is final and may not be reviewed under any circumstances.
